About Quentin de la Bédoyère (The fine portrait on this page is by his friend, the beautiful
Portrait of Quentin de la Bédoyère Jacqueline Alma ©)

Married for more than 50 years to Irené, with 5 children and 14 grandchildren, he has had a full life. Here are just a few examples:—

o    In his youth he spoke at Marble Arch (Speakers’ Corner), taking on all comers. It was scary but fun to build a crowd from nothing, to entertain them, teach them and to deal with all those welcome hecklers. Welcome? You can’t build a crowd without hecklers.

o    In his maturity he is on the professional speaking circuit – addressing a variety of audiences (many of them blue-chip companies) at their conferences and after dinner. He usually speaks about persuasive communication: every audience needs to know about the psychological techniques that really make people change their minds. But listening has to be fun. And they can heckle, too.

o    He spent around 20 years as a marriage counsellor, much of it working in a deprived area of south London. There are few problems resulting from the good and bad elements of human nature that he has not encountered.

o    Much of his professional life has been spent in Financial Services. He retired as managing director of a large unit trust (mutual funds) company which he had initiated himself.

o    He is an artist, painting in a variety of mediums – water colour, acrylic, pastel and oil. And he has been fortunate to exhibit in great galleries like the Mall Gallery, the Llewellyn Alexander Gallery, and the Society of Graphic Fine Art. In 2002, Her Majesty the Queen was graciously pleased to accept his portrait of her mother, Queen Elizabeth. Examples on this site.

He has written several books – from Getting Your Own Way in Business to Autonomy and Obedience in the Catholic Church. His latest book, Drawing Techniques, (Search Press) was published on 15 September 2008.

Cartoono    He is Science Editor of the The Catholic Herald, for which he has been a a regular columnist, feature writer and reviewer for many years. Visit his Science and Faith blog, read and contribute to the discussions. Some of his occasional writings are available on this site.

o    His eldest son is Guy de la Bédoyère, the distinguished historian and archaeologist. When he is not on television, he is writing books. When Quentin and his brother are in their graves he will be the next Marquis de la Bédoyère. Read more about him at his Website . He drew the all-too-accurate cartoon of his father ©.

o    Read more about Quentin in Debrett’s People of Today and Who’s Who in Catholic Life.
