QUIZ
ANSWERS
1 A flagrant misquote from the Bard. The
line (King
John, Act IV) reads “To gild refined gold, to paint the
lily,”
2 A recent study has shown that drivers
using
hand-free mobiles travelled 5 metres further in emergency stops from 60
mph, and made 83% more driving errors.
3 There is no evidence that women have
less innate
maths ability than men. The apparent poorer performance correlates
strongly with cultural prejudice.
4 Many evolutionists hold this to be
true, but more
recent evidence strongly suggests that, though birds and dinosaurs
probably had a common ancestor, Archaeopteryx is not a missing link.
5 Breed’s Hill. Bunker Hill was
mistakenly identified in early reports.
6 The Brits. But their heavy losses gave
the Americans confidence that they could win pitched battles.
7 Not poor Marie Antoinette. The remark
predates her birth by several years.
8 Never. Magna Carta was sealed not signed. King
John probably couldn’t write.
9 Yes, once (Isiah 14:12, in Vulgate and
King James). But it refers to the King of Babylon, not Satan.
10 No, a rotten shot. Old English was a
different
language (Anglo Saxon). Chaucer wrote Middle English. The Our
Father begins in Old English:
Fæder ure þu þe eart on heofonum, Si
þin nama gehalgod.
The strange “þ” character is the
“thorn”
or “th”. Typically type setters substituted a
“y” character, so “ye” should
be pronounced
“the”.
11 True, despite all the wiring diagrams.
12 The seahorse. It carries the young in
a pouch where deposited eggs are fertilised and nurtured.
13 Swann. His bulb preceded
Edison’s invention by 10 months.
14 Eugene Speicher (1883 -1962), not Sargent. Sargent
said:
“Every time I paint a portrait I lose a friend.”
All
portrait painters know both to be true.
15 None. The phrase does not occur.
